Honda Civic Type R

2017–2021K20C1 2.0L turbo

The FK8 is the front-drive track weapon nobody saw coming. We cover the parts that matter when you start lapping: cooling, intake, brakes, suspension, and bolt-on power.

What we cover

  • Cooling (radiators, oil coolers, intercoolers)
  • Intake & exhaust
  • Suspension (coilovers, sway bars, end links)
  • Brakes (pads, rotors, lines)

When Honda brought the FK8 stateside in 2017 it instantly held the front-drive Nürburgring production record. It was the first Type R officially sold in the United States, and it arrived as a fully-formed track car: a 306-hp turbo four, a six-speed manual, an adaptive damper system, and an aero package that actually generated downforce instead of decoration.

Owners quickly learned the FK8 rewards lapping the way few hot hatches do — but they also learned where Honda left margin on the table once you start running back-to-back sessions.

Known weaknesses

The K20C1 is strong, but the factory cooling system was tuned for the street. On track the FK8 heat-soaks: intake air temperatures climb, the ECU pulls timing, and power tapers across a session. The stock intercooler and radiator are the first bottlenecks, and the front-mount intake sits close enough to the engine bay to ingest hot air once the car is hot.

What enthusiasts upgrade first

The first dollars almost always go to cooling and air: a larger intercooler, an upgraded radiator, and a sealed cold-air intake to fight heat-soak. From there owners move to pads, fluid, and stainless lines for repeatable braking, then coilovers or sway bars to dial out the factory understeer.

Engine-code primer

K20C1 is the engine code for the FK8's 2.0-liter direct-injected turbo four — part of Honda's K20C family but unique in its turbocharging, internals, and ECU calibration. When you shop FK8 parts, K20C1 is the code that confirms the part was built for this specific turbo engine and not an earlier naturally-aspirated K20.
